“There's nothing you can do about it! ”, “What can I do? “— we all know these sentences. In times when authoritarian rulers and tech giants act as though the world belongs to them, when anti-democratic parties are achieving record results in elections, it is easy to lose heart.
Maria Mayrhofer, founder of the civil society organization #aufstehn, does not accept this and opposes despair in times of crisis with the strength of the community. She draws energy for her work from the strength of the crowd and is convinced: Especially when the clock is ticking, every single vote counts for democracy. Her encouraging essay is an analysis of current political developments, but also a passionate plea for the resilient potential of civil society.
Maria Mayrhofer is founder and co-managing director of the digital-based campaign organization #aufstehn, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025. The goal: to promote civil society participation and bring about change. The studied political scientist is an expert in digital campaigns and democratic participation. Mayrhofer is Obama Europe Leader and was awarded the “Vienna Women's Prize” for her commitment against online hate.
